Check Out: Article on Racism in Behavioral Sciences

Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to read the recently published article in the journal Behavior and Social Issues titled “Addressing Racism in Behavioral Sciences: Recent Insights in the Experimental Analysis of Fairness and Inequity Aversion”, authored by Celina Tanaka, Marcelo Benvenuti, and Laís Maia from the Department of Experimental Psychology – Behavior Analysis – IPUSP.

This paper presents an innovative analysis of the phenomenon of inequity aversion, linking it to structural racism. Through a behavioral perspective, the study proposes new ways of investigating this significant social issue.

While stimulus equivalence and Relational Frame Theory (RFT) have investigated racial issues, the article highlights the need for a broader approach. It considers racism as a systematic form of discrimination, based on structural inequalities such as the distribution of income and power among racial groups.

The authors emphasize how stimulus control and verbal behavior are related to prejudice, while choice behavior in resource distribution situations reveals central aspects of racism analysis. The research also shows the influence of social and cultural factors on the acceptance or rejection of inequalities, with a focus on racial issues.
